We've all made mistakes on our different paths, some larger than others. But these mistakes are a part of us, they are what make us who we are for better or for worse. Some people, myself included, have taken numerous hard knocks and suffered huge set backs by choosing to ignore, or at the very least, not really listen to advice bestowed upon us. It seems a right of passage to ignore or even loathe your parents and elders as a teenager and perhaps even into early young adulthood; thinking they lack style, knowledge of the latest trends, technological know-how or are just simply out of touch with the times. For most of us this wears off over time as we repeatedly come to find out that we don't really know much about life at all.

There is a wise saying over the west entrance of the library at the University of Colorado: Boulder that reads, "He who knows only his own generation remains always a child." During my time at CU, I came to love seeing this amazing quote every time I passed through the quad. It is a powerful claim of truth in regard to the value unceasing learning and knowledge. Those of us now entering the adult world of life and work are lucky enough to have 5000 years of written history to learn from and study in an effort to avoid the same mistakes and failures of those that came before us.

George Norlin, author of that quote, was obviously referring to the stacks and stacks of books and reference material available inside the campus library, but this knowledge isn't just available from past sources, it can be gained from those older and 'wiser' than us that have navigated the same challenges of life, albeit perhaps under different circumstances. It is in this spirit that this blog has decided to highlight some of these 'insights and lessons from the future' on a monthly basis. These musings of life will come from a wide range of sources and age ranges from those just a few years ahead of us to several generations in front, and contain what each individual feels to be the most important thing they would deliver to themselves as a young and upcoming twenty-something.

The first installment comes from my father, Rodney, age 62.

"Always listen to yourself."

We've all seen the movie Good Will Hunting, and hopefully you remember the excellent scene where Matt Damon asks Robin Williams if he ever has second thoughts or regrets about meeting his wife, and Robin elaborates on his "first date" with his wife while missing a historic game of Red Socks history and lore. If not, check it out below.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v24.nonxt1.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D5ea76bcc76034099%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331279703%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D7B18E9485D29797DF9050970270DE404236C84DB.274742B91E0D6C61351051BBDA2B00AADF05B7E4%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D5ea76bcc76034099%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3Dx37BUIRy2rKY_u6qhnVJh7Cppmk&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

When you are young the regrets you have are usually mistakes that you've made along the way that have set you back. If you talk to people with more age and wisdom on their side, you will come to find out that the biggest regrets are the risks they didn't take or the things that they always wanted to do, but never did. Robin Williams would be feeling this exact sort of regret if he wouldn't have done the "unthinkable" and missed going to World Series game with all of his friends.

This isn't a license to do whatever comes to mind, but it is a nudge to weigh your aspirations and goals with situations and associated risks. We are young, the whole world is in front of us. This position gives us the ability to take more calculated risks or missteps without having to face harsher consequences of a more defined and confining life with a real career, a family and larger financial commitments. If you miss these moments and opportunities when they are presented to you, they may be gone forever.

"Be passionate about everything you're interested in."

Not only is it important to listen to yourself and jump on opportunities when they are presented to you, it is just as important to put everything you have into accomplishing these goals and tackling risks and challenges that stand in your way. There is no sense in taking risks if you aren't going to invest all of your energy into making them a success. That simply is a waste of valuable time and energy. This can be related to job searching, traveling, taking up a new hobby or trying to develop new relationships with people. If you aren't willing to put yourself on the line or in an uncomfortable or new situation, you will not get everything out of that particular experience that you could have. The familiar is always easy to navigate because it is just that: familiar. It is much harder to navigate the uncharted and unknown. These are the experiences that push you to grow and learn.

"Be honest, truthful and upright in ALL you do, so you never have to make excuses."

This is an excellent strategy for exuding passion and giving your all in anything you try. When you are honest with yourself and others about your feelings it pushes you to grow and be more in touch with yourself which helps this cycle become more of a habit and a loop of positive feedback. If you fail, don't make excuses for why you did, reevaluate and try to learn and grow from that experience. It is easy to get down on yourself and lie to yourself about why things don't work out or why they aren't how you would like them to be, but when you make excuses for behaviors or lack of success, you allow the problem to grow almost unknowingly. Such honesty allows you to reevaluate and come to sound conclusions about what is working or not working for you as well as place value and importance on the things you love and enjoy.

Honesty acts as an insurance policy in dealings with others whether on the business or personal stage. A reputation of honesty and genuineness brings people to confide in you as well as builds trust and reliance. If you can be accounted on for your fairness and uprightness, it will yield power in the long run as people come to value your judiciousness and reliability as evidence by strong moral character.

"There's no success like failure and failure's no success at all." -Bob Dylan-

Bob Dylan always had a way with words and lyrics and using them to describe the nuances and experiences of life, and this line from his song Love Minus Zero/ No Limit struck a chord with my dad and embodied the message that he wanted to share with us and the one thing he would give back to his young adult self. It is ok to fail, in fact if you aren't failing then you aren't trying, you are stagnant and most likely not moving forward. No one is perfect, and we can never expect to be. Life is about learning and experiencing as much as you can, while learning what works for you and what doesn't. No two people are alike and everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, interests and dislikes. The importance is in learning the differences and how to play to your strengths.

Failure is a critical step in the process of moving towards success, and at the same time is the exact opposite of success. It is a necessary irony of life. How you respond to your failures and how you gauge the risks and rewards of your choices is what counts. Are you learning and moving forward or dwelling on all that went wrong? All of the greatest minds, the wisest thinkers, the biggest innovators, the most impacting entrepreneurs; what they all have in common is that they have failed and failed time again, but learned valuable lessons from those experiences to be more successful in the future. They weren't afraid to put themselves out there and try something new or different. Our failures become more important than our successes because we learn even more from them.

Obviously risk taking, and putting yourself out there and trying new things comes more naturally for some. If you are someone that struggles with this idea, try and put yourself around people who it comes easy to. I am a firm believer in the idea that who you associate with and hang out with has a direct impact on the decisions and actions one takes. This isn't to do any disservice to agency and freewill, it is a simple truth to the social nature of human beings. People can't help but rub off on each other, which is why it is important to associate yourself with people who have the qualities you would like to develop. It will help you immensely, I promise.

I'll leave you with Bob Dylans song Love Minus Zero/ No Limit. This version is live from is album Dylan Live 1975. The song was originally written as a tribute to Dylan's future wife Sara Lowndes (Wikipedia). Like many Dylan tunes, the true meaning of this track is elusive, on the surface it can be read about love and a great woman, but there are many nuances and turns that leave the true meaning open to interpretation, which is what makes any song great. At any rate it is a great song about finding out what is really important in life. Until next time best luck in your endeavors and please feel free to comment below about important lessons and failures in your own life and how they have helped you grow. Thanks for reading!

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v12.nonxt6.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D6dce88776ea7eeb4%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331279703%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D10CB96A8DA974DA2864A99DE0F82EACBD97E7AA7.630A9EAF5B84267ACBC2763280895F019C1D15BB%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D6dce88776ea7eeb4%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DZ-PMV0768VcxGvItuEGa8Z1hhyY&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

If you are anything like me, you either lack the funds necessary to keep up with constant turnover that is this insanity of techno-development, or you simply aren't nearly as concerned or insecure about what you do have as t.v. and big business would like you to be.

Regardless the silver lining is that there is a solution to revamping your smart phone almost as fast as they can create the next best thing, and that answer is the ever-growing app market for our much loved devices. New apps are constantly being released and these days it is virtually impossible to keep track of the growing demand and supply of these megabytes of joy.

According to techcrunch.com, the Android App market was expected to surpass Apple's App Store in August of 2011, and was on pace to have 700,000 Apps available by the beginning of 2012, nearly 200,000 more than Apple's store. While numerous Apps are available on both platforms, it doesn't negate the fact that there exists many more applications than anyone has time to explore. Unless you are subscribed to technology blogs and news sites, or an avid fan of programing and App development, it is impossible to keep up.

Luckily for you, in my search for some new, fresh updates for my phone, I stumbled across some pretty cool Apps that I think any quarter lifer might want or need, but that they may not have known about or even knew they needed. Thus this blog brings to you: The Seven Best Apps to Navigate Your Quarter Life".

Google Music- Free (99 cents for iPhone)

Have you ever gone to play a song on your iPhone or Android only to remember that you recently removed it to make room for your newest and hottest tracks or new App that you recently discovered? With Google Music you never have to worry about missing one of your favorite songs due to lack of space on your phone again. Google Music lets you store up to 20,000 songs from your personal music collection on your own virtual cloud and makes these songs available for access on your mobile device. This app also provides access to music to purchase on the Android market. The only major drawback is that it can take some time to upload a boat load of songs to your cloud, but once they are there you are ready to rock and roll, anytime anywhere.

Click For iPhone Click For Android

Currents- Free

This App provides a simple interface for compiling and accessing all that you like to look at on the web. Satski also has the ability to track distances covered, altitude, ascents, descents, and the speed you are cruising at. The App also features an option to find out where your friends are at should you happen to get split up or decide to take some different runs. Most importantly, the App has an emergency feature linked to the gps should anything happen while on the hill. The days activities can be viewed in the Stats Viewer, as well as real time replays. Luckily for students returning for spring classes across the country, the hardest assignment was staying awake through the usual first day monotony of syllabi and mission statements and deciding whether or not to show up to the next class of the year albeit probably a little bit hung over.

Interestingly enough this attempt to shutdown the best parts of the Internet marks a milestone of the hardest congress has worked in 2012 and perhaps the entire past year. Those silly politicians don’t seem to realize the chaos that would ensue if Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Pandora, youTube, and others were removed from the Internet or severely altered from their current format. How else would us multitasking twenty somethings survive through class or throw bangers without our gigabytes of the freshest illegally downloaded tracks?

Luckily for us, our gracious President has stepped in and postponed this atrocity, at least for the time being. And in support of that decision and in protest to our idiot congress and greedy multibillionaire executives in Hollywood, I thought I would take a minute to share a few new great bands I have been put onto and discovered in the last 24 hours while the internet has been partially shutdown. That’s a funny idea: shut down the Internet. What is this North Korea?

Crystal Fighters

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v3.nonxt7.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3De59aa14fbd4760a3%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1331279703%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D52E284D070653F21EF78EBEA60265991BE45F9A1.7436CB161FFBA1987E364D481AB0A991DA82C22A%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3De59aa14fbd4760a3%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D20yLU1OBdnDAkfVA9uH1lKNecIA&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

The Crystal Fighters are a British/ Spanish electronic band who formed in London in 2007. I have to give credit where credit is due, a huge thank you to my friend Leila Strattan for putting me onto most of these bands in the last few days, with the exception of The Limousines. I found those guys just searching on youTube for this blog post. What would we do without the internet? A huge thank you to wikipedia as well for all of the information about these great bands. While you are at it why don't you follow this link over to google and sign their petition to stop the infringement on our rights to content on the internet that I think most of us would agree should be free. It only takes a couple seconds and the contribution is huge. We'll call it a fair trade for the new tunes. Thanks again to all of you for stopping by, and until next time, "Keep Listening and Reading".

End Piracy, Not Liberty

https://www.google.com/landing/takeaction/

Fresh Meat.... I guess it may be a way for life to teach you to keep persevering and chasing down dreams and goals (or at least, avoid a failure to launch). Either way one thing is for certain being back on the bottom doesn't leave a very good taste in your mouth.

They call it being a senior for a particular reason, it is the idea that at this point in your life you have learned all that you need to successfully move onto the next phase, being a productive citizen, leadership, how to be an adult, all that good stuff. Then they confer your status of achievement and snuff your shining light out with a rectangular piece of paper and kick you back to the bottom of the deck to be shuffled into the mix once again. Ouch. It was easier after middle school, there was high school to look forward to, and after high school, college. But this time around the club of the real world is a lot harder to break into and the stakes are that much higher.

I've watched over the years as many of my friends have entered the liminal world of post-college life ahead of me, only for them to find out that I have now caught up with them once again. It's nothing against them and it certainly has nothing to do with me (I took a good five and a half years at the undergrad thing). This blog in the past had been about things I was interested in that were going on around the state of Colorado: music, art, activities, and happenings. With a new phase of life, new interests and goals have come into focus. While I still love the arts and will continue to blog about them, the new focus of life is surviving the dreaded quarter life crisis and chronicling my path to new adventures and successes. My hope is that by detailing my journey and more importantly my missteps in this new phase of life, I can help those I care about and those coming after me find some wisdom through the mistakes and progress I've made.

The first message I want to share with you all is that it isn't a race, and in fact, the globalized American culture is taking longer for people to reach a position of independence than ever before. "The average American job hops eight times before the age of 32, the average college graduate accrues $20,000 in education loan debt, and the average age to get married is now 27," (www.quarterlifecrisis.com). You're not alone, We're not alone. We are all in this thing together and dealing with the same stresses and pressures from parents, our peers, and our society. The important thing is to learn how to deal with these stressors in healthy ways, i.e. not returning to old college habits of knocking back gallons of beer to quell our depression and angst, but rather doing healthy things, getting involved in things that will take you where you want to be in a year, two years, or even five.

For me that has involved going to the gym regularly, developing a love and passion for playing guitar, and now blogging (once again) and working to develop my online presence via social media, since many of the positions I have been looking into are looking for strong communicators of not only traditional media but new digital and social communication. My last attempts at blogging and creating interesting media weren't that serious or successful, this time around will be different. It's about making small steps and building your reputation and skills over time. Virtually nobody, not even George W. Bush, lands their dream job directly out of school, and this is even truer in today's tight economy where competition is fierce and opportunity is low.

http://burstorbloom.blogspot.com/2010/09/quarter-life-crisis-1.html

The second tip I would like to mention is networking. The concept isn't really taught in school, and in my opinion, should be highly encouraged and discussed in the last year or two of college. I can think back to the numerous menial jobs I have held since crossing that first milestone of a job nearly 12 years ago. Most of the jobs I have gotten, and at the very least the ones I've enjoyed, I got because I knew somebody that already worked there or knew of someone who had a connection to a particular position or job. This fact has held true for me since then and it is unlikely to be any different in the real world. I am by no means an expert at the art of networking, but I do understand its importance.

An easy way to start is to call your family's friends, or the parents of your own friends and introduce yourself if you aren't familiar with them already. Tell them what you have been up to, tell them where you want to go. Don't be shy. If you have a particular field or position in mind ask if they know anyone that works in that industry that you could talk with. Then meet or talk with these connections whether or not they have an open position. It is ok to simply call individuals or companies and find somebody to speak with about positions you are interested in and what is entailed in that job. You can find out what they do each and everyday, and find out how they got to that position and what steps they took to be successful in that role. This does two things. You've now learned more about the job, its role, and whether it is really something you want to do, as well as made a connection that lets that individual or company know you are interested in that particular job and would like to join their organization should something open up in the future.

It's not an easy time to be a young adult, but we also have more tools available to us with the internet, social media, and a globalizing economy than ever before. Obviously it can be discouraging to send in resume after resume with no response back. I too have already started to feel the weight of that on my confidence and optimism, but there are many avenues to the job search. "The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again, expecting different results," - Albert Einstein. If you find yourself in that position, try something new and off the wall in your search for happiness and success. Change your resume up, get a new format for your cover letter, even a new haircut or look can give you the motivation to keep going.

Nobody likes to be the fresh meat, but one advantage we all have going for us is the fact that we are fresh. Older, finer meats will be quick to spoil and don't have the same amount of spices available to them. Be ready and stay vigilant. Don't be afraid to comment on these posts if you find them helpful or a crock of S$%t. Remember its about networking and making connections. Pass this onto your friends if you think it would help them out. They'll be more inclined to look out for you in the future as a result. Until next time I wish you all good luck with your goals and successes. I'm off to find a degree of connection that works with the Chicago Cubs because "it isn't just about what you know, and it isn't just who you know. It's actually who you know, who knows you, and what you do." - Bob Burg

http://typingwithfakenails.blogspot.com/2011/05/twentysomethings-something-like-crisis.html

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ourquarterlife.blogspot.com/2012/01/fresh-meat-again-surviving-after.html' title='Fresh Meat.... While the official start of spring is still a few weeks out and another snow or two without doubt linger on the horizon, the warm front moving through Boulder has induced some early summertime stretching campus wide. Talks of spring break and summer plans have begun to overtake snow stories and arguments over whether or not to venture off to the bars in the cold of the night. This is why we live in Colorado.

If you are from out of state and this is your first summer rodeo in the square state, know that nothing about the spring and summer here could be remotely considered square, except for you’re lack of knowledge regarding the incomparable awesomeness that is the Colorado summer. (Natives, feel free to insert your best California joke here.) Colorado may be known for its wintertime activities, but the joys of the summer months are the state’s lesser known secret. So without further a due, Sublimely Loose Lucy presents it’s summer guide to getting down inside the rectangle. In no particular order, here are the top five things to get outside and see and do in the Colorado sun.

Ride the Riv The Rocky Mountains are the source of much of the freshwater that winds its way around the United States and these same waterways provide days worth of adventure and fun for residents. Locally, you can hit up Boulder Creek for some tubing and lounging out creek-side. The Boulder creek has a great area next to the creek for cook outs and summer get togethers under the shade of the trees lining the creek and trails. Sometimes though, the water level is low and can provide a rocky ride that could leave tubers with a painful reminder of the days adventure and second guessing their next mission down the river. Most days though, the creek provides a great lazy spot to cruise the river and some fun drops along the way. Cost: Free (as long as you got a tube)

For those looking for a little bit more excitement on the rivers, thirty minutes south of Boulder, in Golden, Clear Creek is usually raging. It is a much bigger creek and is home to a kayak course and some intense rapids. Tubing is more than welcome, although some kayakers here feel they own the river, don’t let them get you down, they most likely woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

It can be nearly just as fun to sit creek-side and watch people attempt to navigate the rapids You will be pretty much guaranteed to see a few unluckies, fail to make it smoothly through the obstacles. The current is strong and the river is fairly deep in some spots. There are some locations that you can jump in from the side with no worry of hitting the bottom. If you choose to hit up Clear Creek, know and consider your water abilities before making the decision to cruise this river. Don’t say we didn’t warn you, it is a lot of fun, but it makes Boulder Creek look like a backyard irrigation stream.

The great thing about Clear Creek is that there is a lot to do on it. A few miles up US 6 just before Tunnel One, there is a pull off on the left side, and a trail that goes down to an area where you can usually find people cliff jumping into the river. Afterwards, if you go on the right day, you can hit up the Coors Brewery Tour and score some free frosty beverages to wind down you action packed day with. The Coors Brewery is located at 13th and Ford Streets in downtown Golden. The tour hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Monday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Cost: Free (again, provided you have a tube)

If you are an adrenaline junky you might want to skip straight to the great rafting that Colorado has to offer. Colorado is home to some of the best white water in the nation ranging from the mellow to Holy S#%t!!!! The Colorado, Arkansas, Dolores, and the North Platte Rivers have something for everyone. The closest places to Boulder to get your raft on are in Idaho Springs and Denver. Clear Creek Rafting offers trips on the Platte and Clear Creek and hast all skill levels as well as single and multi-day trips. 350 Whitewater Rd. Idaho Springs, Colo. 80452 303-567-9142 Cost: $39 and up (single day trips), $325 and up (multi day trips)

Get Your Camp On Colorado is notorious for its big mountains and the Rocky Mountains are home to 12 national parks and trails as well as 43 state parks. These spots host something for everyone including: camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, backpacking, and four wheeling. The sheer amount of available public land allows for everything from overnight getaways to multi- day trips. Whether you want to drive in or get a little more rugged and pack your gear in and out, a suitable area to do so can be found throughout the summer.

If you want to get into the wild, a new area on the south slope of Pikes Peak is scheduled to open 15,000 acres for recreational use this summer. While this area won’t be available for camping and motorized all-terrain vehicles; fishing, hiking and biking will be allowed. This gorgeous location has hardly been touched, as access in the past has been nonexistent over the last century. There is other camping available in the area however, making this area ideal for day mission on a longer trip.

Everyone seems to have their personal favorite camping locations, and knowledge of certain spots is limited so finding an outdoorsy native can be essential for heading to the money camp spots as this information is largely passed on via word of mouth and taking new people to the location. Some of Sublimely Loose Lucy’s favorite local spots can be found less than an hour outside Boulder off of Magnolia Road and above Gold Hill.

If you want to journey a little farther just east of Idaho Springs, lies St. Mary’s Glacier. Four-wheel drive is critical for accessing the upper camping spots, including access to the several lakes that lie tucked away on top of the mountain. This beautiful area provides four wheeling, fishing, and lots of forest area to explore. This is a great spot to hit in the middle of the summer, as it is very high in elevation and includes a glacier on top of a mountain, duh. Going early in the season, might limit how high you can go because snow might not have melted, and towards the end of the summer it can get quite cold up that way.

Many areas operate on a first come first serve basis, however during peak times, like over holidays for example, a reservation through the local forest services might be needed. Technically most places want you to make a reservation and pay a fee to access and use the land, however it is fairly easy to find spots where this can be ignored, especially for quick overnight trips, without fear of getting in any trouble.

As always respect the area you are planning on going to, including fire restrictions, closed trails, and restrictions on motorized vehicles. If you plan on fishing make sure you have a license. This will save you from hassle with park rangers, as well as provide you with some insurance should you get hurt. If you have a fishing license you are covered for any cost incurred by rescue crews coming to pull you out of a tight spot or even cover flight for life if you really find yourself in a pinch. Without it you will be left to foot the bill. Cost: Free- $25 per vehicle for some locations

Catch a Show The Colorado music scene runs deep and could arguably be one of the best spots in the nation to catch your favorite bands. We would be remiss not to mention the world famous Red Rocks Amphitheater located in Morrison, about 40 minutes south of Boulder. If you haven’t been to see the amphitheater or the rocks in the park, this is a must for your Colorado summer. Pollstar magazine awarded Red Rocks the honor of the best small outdoor venue 11 times in a row, and subsequently removed Red Rocks from the running. The award is now called the Red Rocks Award.

If you aren’t into music the park is worth checking out anyways with numerous trails and to see the staggering rock formations. If you are into music, it’s a win-win, andcatching any good act will leave you with little doubt as to why people travel from all over the world to see this place. Red Rocks brings through the biggest acts in the business and this summer has already announced dates to host Bisco Inferno, Crosby, Stills & Nash, John Butler Trio, String Cheese Incident, and Gov’t Mule, with many more still to be announced. www.redrocksonline.com

Colorado is home to several other great outdoor venues as well. Here in Boulder, Chautauqua National Historic Landmark hosts various events throughout the summer. Check their website to see what going on this summer. www.chautauqua.com Another great venue outside of Ft Collins is the Mishawaka Amphitheater. This venue has hosted the Sonic Bloom Music Festival the last few years, and this year will kick off the summer with a bluegrass music festival called the Waterfront Music Festival in May. The Mish is a really cool venue with camping available down the road as well as a river behind the venue to play in. www.mishawakaconcerts.com Cost: Free- $$$$$ depending on the act you want to see

Take a Drive The scenery in Colorado is second to none and one of the best ways to take it all in is cruising around with the windows down and some good music blasting. This can be a great time with friends or that one you love. One of our personal favorites starts in Boulder. You can head up the canyon to Nederland, and then head south on CO 130. There a few spots that you can head back east to get back to Boulder depending on the length of the drive you want to take. The longest route will take you down through Central City and Black Hawk on US 6 and you can then head back to Boulder via Highway 93.

Another great route is the Alpine Triangle, which is an area between Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray. The triangle contains 150 miles of beautiful roads including some four-wheel drive routes. The drive is great for checking out the local scenery as well as wildflowers (peaking in late July and early August.) If you take the Silver Thread route following Highway 149 you can cross the Continental Divide, visit some historic sites, learn some geology, and see the site of the infamous cannibal Alfered Packer.

Party favors for these rides are optional; just remember there are no open containers allowed inside vehicles for passengers in the state of Colorado. Scenic drives can be incorporated into many other outdoor activities that are available in the state. Some additional scenic drives can be found at http://away.com/colorado-summer-2005/index.html. Cost: 1-2 tanks of gas + a little money for any stops you might want to make along the way

Take a Hike There are many miles of excellent trails in Colorado available for a range of uses from hiking to horseback riding or biking. These trails can be a great way to get to spots that are less accessible and thus more full of natural beauty. Many trails can be found locally around Boulder, including hikes to the flatirons in Chautauqua as well as hikes off of Canyon Blvd. These are great for exercise as well as seeing our great state from a different vantage point that can really put things into perspective.

If you are really feeling ambitious Colorado has a number of fourteeners which are mountains that are reach an elevation greater than 1400 feet, roughly two and a half miles above sea level. There are some that are extremely difficult and others that are easier so make sure to choose one that you feel comfortable confronting. Fourteeners provide astonishing views of Colorado as well as a personal challenge to accomplish. Make sure to leave for your hike prepared with plenty of water and warm clothes as the weather can change dramatically and suddenly with elevation. www.trails.com can be a good place to start to find out about potential trails and hikes available around the state. Cost: Free- $25 per vehicle to enter some areas

While this certainly is nowhere near the extent of available summertime activities, these are some must-dos for any outdoors enthusiast, and Colorado provides opportunities to do them in spades. There is something here in Colorado for any and everyone so be sure to take advantage of all that there is to do.

The spring semester has been flying by and the summer is guaranteed to do the same, so start making those summer plans with your friends. Sublimely Loose Lucy would like to be your summertime guide to fun this year, so stay tuned for more advise and information on what is going down in Colorado this summer. Until next time, blaze those trails.

If you don't know, now you know

Pulling into the parking lot at the Denver West Shopping Center in Lakewood, Colo., a nervous excitement ran through my body. I was on a mission, and the objective was infiltrating Jamba Juice with some newfound information passed onto me by a confidential friend who had been going to school in California.

“Jamba Juice has a secret menu and it is delicious!” she told me.

I composed myself and entered the Jamba Juice armed with all the information I needed to sound like a cool, seasoned pro. “Let me get a Pink Star.” My brother. staying true to character, asked, “Um I can’t remember the name of the other special one I like, its called like gummy something…”

“You mean White Gummi…?” the countergirl answered back with a little bit of attitude.

“Yeah that’s the one. I’ll have an original White Gummi,” said my brother.

The counter girl paused, staring back at us for just a moment like we had just committed a serious crime. Had my friend broken an unspoken rule of Jamba lore? Were the secret flavors by and for members only of the Jamba family? With a fuss she rang in our order collected our money and sent us to wait for our new-found secret.

I have run this hustle numerous times since that day this summer, and the experience has usually been more than pleasant. Maybe the employee that first time was having a bad day but it made the experience all that more special and added to the effect of doing something unknown for the first time. Since then, my experience has been that most employees are more than willing to share their inside knowledge of the treats that remain unknown to the majority of Jamba Juice customers.

The Jamba Juice secret flavors are as diverse as there are different store locations. Employee knowledge of the flavors differs from store to store, leaving ample opportunity to hunt down those elusive flavors that are hard to come by. Popular flavors, according to David, an employee at the Univesity Memorial Center Jamba Juice on campus include: White Gummi Bear, Pink Star, Fruity Pebbles, Sourpatch Kid, Butter Finger and Strawberry Shortcake.

“Some of them are old or special flavors that were taken off the menu and others are just creations that employees have come up with that have become popular,” said David.

Other unconfirmed flavors include Raspberry Dreamin’, Rainbow Sherbert, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Orange Dream Machine, Skittles, Tootsie Roll, other colored flavors of gummi bears, and Reese’s Pieces.

The names of these flavors say it all. They taste like a delicious blended treat true to their identity. There is certainly a theme with the flavor names as well, and employees at the UMC Jamba Juice said one reason they might not be on the menu is that they are certainly not as healthy as other traditional menu options at Jamba Juice. Many of these special flavors are more like sorbets, rather than smoothies, using sherbets and juices to get their unique flavor rather than the fruit and yogurt used for on-menu items.

Jamba Juice originated in California, which is also where the majority of new flavors can be found. Certain flavors, like the Pacific Passion, are only located in certain regions of the country leaving the question, who is crafting the next great Colorado flavor, wide open.

“I went to this one Jamba Juice here in California and they had some flavors written out with marker on a crumpled sheet that they let me and my friend see. They had a Smarties one, another called purple dinosaur, and I’m pretty sure there was a Warheads one,” said my California connection. Her only advice was, “just don’t ever order the peanut butter and jelly kind. It does taste like real pb-and-j, but it’s just wrong and the texture is off.”

The rush I felt of ordering off the menu is almost just as rewarding as the delicious snack I received. Who doesn’t like to have a little insider information that no one else knows about? Plus it is guaranteed to be a hit among friend and family, or with that someone you have had your eye on. So the next time a craving for a delicious treat hits, rethink Jamba Juice, because it isn’t just healthy, nourishing smoothies they are serving; that’s just what’s on the menu.

Hear Son, Have another Shot of Heroin

"Oh sweet mama, daddy's got them deep Elem blues." The summer concert season is over and its bittersweet for any music fan, so many good shows, and so many good times. All that can be said is thank God for the Colorado music scene. Its hard to choose just one best moment from summer 'o9, but in all honesty nothing has left me so hofefully addicted than the big, fully saturated harmonies and sound of The Grateful Dead. Seeing the surviving members of The Dead twice this summer left my mind blown and awestruck. I remember leaving the show at the Pepsi Center trying to wrap my mind around what I had just seen and been a part of, with lingering dreams of life in the summer of '69 on my mind.

The true frosting on the cake is that in today's modern age, many fans of truly amazing music like The Dead can relive their favorite concert experiences via online forums like archive.org or various torrent sites. The truly great artists embrace the free dispersion of their music. Artists like Pretty Lights have taken a lesson from a humble practice that was made popular by The Grateful Dead. Fans can literally time travel to a unique and great moment in time, embrace the love and try to turn it into something good in everyday life.

The beauty of a band that has played over 36,000 different songs and over 2,000 shows is there is something in there for everyone. The Grateful Dead just might be the only band that is capable of surpassing the bounds of time and subjective conscience. Like "The Pepsi Challange," I offer "The Grateful Dead Challange." Find a show on Archive.org, pick a random date: a birthday, a holiday, a random day; listen to an entire show and try and come back and argue there was not one thing in there to enjoy. The Dead is as American as apple pie.

The 2 shows I saw on The Dead's summer tour were two completely different experiences with unique vibes at each show, that were equally as compelling and powerful. The May 7th show downtown at the Pepsi Center, brought out all of the diehard deadheads from the metro area as well as new fans thirsting for their first taste of what The Grateful Dead might have been like. On a night that also saw the celebration of drummer Bill Kreutzmann's 63rd birthday, The Band left it all on the stage enjoying every minute of what they were doing. One single show exposed me to at least 5 new favorite songs. The cohesion of The Band and the tight intricate way they play together is truly amazing. It takes some serious playing ability to start a song, diverge into a jam, hop into another track, and pull it all back together in the end as the melody returns to the original tune. The Grateful Dead's music embodies the ability to be and do anything provided enough determination.

One of the coolest things at the show that can be heard anytime it is listened to and relived again, is just how into the show the audience is. I am a huge fan of live recordings and enjoy hearing the audience's influence on the show. It is great to hear everyone's singing along rival the sound amplified from the stage, and hearing the band take note and return the favor back to the audience. Not only is their music phenomenal, but they have truly one of the best followings and fans of any group.

While it is extremely difficult to find any performance that is 100 percent perfect, that isn't what really matters. The music is more concerned with emotion and being in the moment. Perhaps the song that best exemplifies this sort of mind set are the live performances of "Space." "Space" is a track where the percussionists Bill Kruetzmann and Mickey Hart attempt to play musically a particular "location" in the universe. And so to like the never-ending and uncertain spread of the universe, no one can ever really be sure just what is about to happen. All that is certain is that anyone listening will probably feel different on the other side. It is the power of sheer improvzation and creation, the descision to push the limits and take risks, that The Grateful Dead embody.

I left the Pepsi Center that night feeling better than I had before I had come. I was keenly aware that I had been apart of something that would never take place again. It was a privileged and humbling experience that I thought I would never get to experience and surely wouldn't be able to again and I clung to this trying to remember and understandwhat I had experienced for the next few days and weeks.

Then the Rothbury Music Festival did the incredible and booked The Dead for some good ol' fourth o' July fun in Michigan. The Dead's picture could indeed be found next to America in the dictionary. Once again The Band started up the machine and doing what they do, began to work the crowd into a raucous frenzy. This time around I was on the other side of the coin. I understood the older people at Pepsi Center and their willingness to embrace my presence at my first Dead experience ever. I wanted nothing more than my friends to feel the same love, energy, and power that I had felt two months before and left me boisterously looking for more.

I loved seeing how happy my friends were seeing a dream come true right in front of them. And once again the boys didn't disappoint, playing more popular songs than they did in May, perhaps because it was a younger crowd. Not to worry though, there were some new discoveries that are now new favorites as well, one of which has had particular influence on this forum.

It may be a bold statement but these guys are the definition of what it means to be in a band and what it should all be about. Listeners can pick life lessons from their lyrics, melodies, and showmanship. I left Rothbury a changed person, in part to the legacy and influence of The Grateful Dead. While The Band's touring future remains uncertain, I find it hard-pressed to believe that they will call it quits without a proper goodbye to their diehard and loyal fans, whose love they equally reciprocate. The summer season is over, and while that doesn't mean great shows will not be around, a little piece of me will be dreaming of the spring months when the summer festivals reveal their lines ups and the summer tours start up once again. In the meantime I will be putting out the good vibes and calling in good karma with a mantra of "Bobby, Phil, Mickey, Bill, Please just one more saturday night. Please.

Van back in action in Colorado

Younger music lovers quite possibly only know Van Morrison by the song "Brown Eyed Girl," but to older listeners, Morrison's return to Colo. leaves them jumping for joy and a chance to get at tickets that are priced throught he roof.

Unfortuantly for many, the cheap seats at Wells Fargo Theater, are long gone. For diehard fans though, reserved pit and floor seats are still available selling for $350 dollars. The consolation prize: you will be up close and personal with Van the Man.

The ticket prices have left many fans stunned, but its important to realize that Van hasn't played Colo, since his stop at Red Rocks in 2005. Before that it had been 28 years since Morrison had even given a second thought to a Colorado date.

Big name acts draw big money, Anyone who has tried to jump on board for The Rolling Stone's 40 Licks Tour is sure to remember the outrageous prices for tickets. Phish tickets at Red Rocks this summer sold for just as much in the lot.

While the prices surely limit exposing a new audience to Van Morrison, consider the man hasn't toured hard since the 1980s, making only occasional stops in the U.S. He has refused to become defined by his most popular songs, a fact that will leave audiences guessing what he will play next.

Its these facts that has elevated his popularity and made him one of the best vocalists and singers of all time, as well has one of the most interesting showmen around.

If by some means you can find yourself inside the Wells Fargo Theater on Sept. 26, do not hesitate to do so. If you are a true fan or someone just learning about Van, go if you can. Collins musician, Derek Smith took the stage for his first ever performance at the world class venue. While a night of great music was guaranteed with a great line-up for friday night, no one was ready for the explosiveness that would take place when Pretty Lights (Smith's musical proudction) took to the stage.

Clouds moving in from the west stirred together and moved over Red Rocks as the audience came to life in anticipation for a night of Pretty Lights. One track in and it was raining, two tracks in it was coming down, and five tracks in Red Rocks saw sleet in late July. Most wouldn't have wanted it any other way as the rain whipped the crowd into a crazy frenzy.

A few people could be seen trying to hunker down and find protection from the torrential downpour, but most people, in true Colorado fashion, removed their useless shirts, threw their hands in the air, and asked God to "bring it on."

While Pretty Lights might want to thank the rain for getting the crowd's energy amped up, he cannot be given enough credit for his abilities to feel the vibe of the crowd and what was going on, and turn around and pump it right back to them through his vinyl and turn tables.

Perhaps even more impressive than Pretty Lights connection with his audience, is his ability to continuously pull deep cuts out from start to finish. It seems as if when he isn't playing, he's surely searching record shops for vintage vinyl that no one has thought to combine with hard hitting beats and other electronic sounds.

He is a master of his craft and pushes his abilities as far as he can. He builds up emotion in his music to a higher level than most djs, then cuts it loose at the most opportune moments, all in one of the most unique styles out there.

It was evident that Pretty Lights, a Colorado local who has frequented shows at Red Rocks, was well prepared for the biggest night of his musical career so far. Once he started dropping the freshest beats on the crowd he didn't stop for nearly two hours, leaving the audience more and more blown away with his skills.

The culmination of everything; a local up and coming musician, the greatest out door venue in the world, brutal rain, and an ecstatic audience cheering on their hometown boy; made for a special night for Pretty Lights and all that were in attendance.

When Pretty Lights finished the crowd erupted in support, and anyone unfamiliar with the dj was sure to leave that night a converted fan. As a supporting act, he seemed to steal the show for the time he was on stage. Hopefully for him, Sound Tribe Sector Nine was equally impressed with the performance and not upset by what could be considered as a supporting act upstaging the headliner.

Sound Tribe Sector Nine seemed to come out a little flat and had some difficulty getting the crowd to shift from the hard hitting Pretty Lights to a more natural sounds of STS9. In their defense, they had a lot to overcome after Pretty Lights. The rain had drained the energy out of the crowd, leaving people massed together to keep warm in their sopping clothes as they waited for the music to return, the dance to start, and the temperature to rise.

The reality is simply that Pretty Lights went out and did what he does. There was no intention to upstage Sound Tribe, he simply brought everything he had and left it all on the stage in true Colorado fashion. He pushed his own limits and left the audiences minds blown. It is this same attitude that has led him to make his recordings available for free on his website, a trend he plans to continue when his new album that is currently in the works, drops.

This attitude has led to his accelerated rise from a local act playing house parties, to a talented composer and musician playing shows across the country. This Red Rocks performance helped to expose his sound to a diverse crowd that is sure to spread his name to all their friends.

The Colorado music scene is flourishing and if you aren't involved, you are missing out. For all those in attendance last night, you might have witnessed the beginning of the next hot national electronic act that will consume the nation. Get in on the ground floor, go see this guy. He plays next in Colorado in Aspen Sept. 5.

2nd Annual Music Festival Raises The Bar A Mile Higher

This past weekend the Colorado music scene rallied together in Commerce City to welcome plenty of great acts to the stage at the Mile High Music Festival once again. For those that attended last year, it might have been difficult to once again, pony up close to $200 for the event again this year. That's because while plenty of great shows were going on last year, thousands of people were suffering from what seemed an ill prepared festival.

In hindsight though, its important to realize that this is an extremely young festival that held its inaugural gathering last year. If the changes from then and this year are any indication of things to come in future years, the Mile High Music Festival could become the crown jewell of Colorado's already stellar music scene, bringing the promoters dreams to fruition.

Those at last year's festival surely recall the deathly heat that engulfed the audience and seemed unescapable, at least until the sun went down. A lack of available drinking water and shade exponentially added to these problems.

Many other festivarians simply found an oasis in the shade of the West Main Stage and called that location home for the remainder of the festival. Unfortunately for these people, great bands were playing on other stages, but for many the sacrifice in the heat was too much to handle in 2008.

Mile High, thankfully, was a quick study, and this year, saw few of the issues that left some patrons disgruntled last year. Stages were much closer together, meaning less time spent mobbing through the heat to get to the next show. Also water stations and water bottle recycle/ refill stations could be found throughout the grounds. More areas with picnic tables covered by pavilions for concert goers to sit down and relax were available. Cloud cover on Sunday also helped to keep things cooler until later in the afternoon.

One minor issue at this year's festival, was the doubling up of great acts playing at similar times creating far to tough of decisions for drunk, stoned twenty-somethings to act upon. Thievery Corporation played virtually at the same time as Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Gov't Mule also played at a similar time as Matisyahu. SLLs adivise for zealous music lovers would be to keep moving to catch everything there was to see or to be selective for your favorite acts at this festie.

This year's lineup definitely drew more big name acts to the stage than last year, which can be tough for promoters and event planners to handle. Not only do they have to make room for up and coming and local acts, which Mile High did a great job with, but promoters must also work to bring the finest big name acts music has to offer to the Mile High City.

The biggest name on the bill this year had to be Widespread Panic who threw it all down and closed out both Saturday and Sunday night in epic style. Their legendary jams took listeners on a ride far from the worries of reality and time. It all seems so effortless for them, as they rock out in such a nonchalant manner, while the crowd stirs and moves like gypsies in the night.

Another highlight of Sunday had to be Theivery Corporation. If any group of musicians has the potential to bring diverse crowds of people together, it is these guys. They are an eclectic bunch of support surrounding two djs. Their music is politically charged and is as diverse as the members that surround the two djs. As are the band members multinational, so to is their extraordinary sound. These guys draw influence from African, Indian, Spanish, Brazillian, and Reggae influences, as well as mixing sounds of dub, acid jazz, and lounge sounds.

The beauty of Mile High is that there is something there for everyone, it might be something fans show up to see, or maybe just a new fresh sound you knew you were always waiting to hear. Bands ranging from Tool to Buddy Guy and everything in between were at ears length.

One genera that music lovers might have been missing was an electronic stage, but already there is an unconfirmed rumor that next years festival will feature an electronic stage and later playing times.

While the location representing the Mile High city could be better, Dicks Sporting Goods Outdoor Fields provide a utilitarian location for a festival that is just beginning to grow up. While the lineup and other changes for next year will remain uncertain until the festival season comes again, one thing that is certain is that it will be exciting to see what direction the festival heads. So when next years festival season rolls around be sure to keep some SLL on your mind for the latest news and drop on back in.

Well I Can Check That Off My List Of Things To Do Before I Die

Its official, last night was one of the best nights I have ever had at Red Rocks. Blazed and Confused was off the hook. Snoop Dog was killing it, Slightly Stoopid rocked. I don't know what all you Slightly haters are talking about when you say they put on on a wack live show, because I thought it was great. Oh yea, and I forgot to mention it was all free.

The party started much earlier in the evening at The Apple Store in Boulder, where the band EOTO (drummers from String Cheese Incident), were doing a live music demo. It was surprising the whole place wasn't packed, but then again EOTO does fly a little bit under the music scene radar. Not surprisingly, green and yellow bracelets were prevalent throughout the crowd. Luckily for me, the right mouths opened to the right people and by mid day I was in the loop and thank god because WE WERE THERE.

While EOTO played only a few songs, it was still epic. Just the location made it worth everything. I can't remember the last time I saw a band perform so closely and so intimately with the audience. Jason Hann and Michael Travis were, like usual, in their element grinning and feeding off of each other and the crowd.

The duo weren't hesitant about answering any questions the audience had and explained many of the inner workings of their power house drum and bass music. They told the audience about hand signals they use during the show, but also made it clear that the two vibe off of each other and have been doing it for so long, they often know what the other is thinking or trying to do just by body language.

Both were more than willing to talk about all the equipment they use to make their sound, and believe me, after hearing and seeing it up close and in action, I am even more impressed that the two manage to make the sounds they do. EOTO is a 100 percent improvisational group meaning they only perform live.

This aspect of the band makes the experience of seeing them live all the more worth it. It ads to the excitement of the show as anything can happen and knowing that will leave you amazed at the complexity that goes into their music and their abilities as musicians to produce it.

The two of them must manage up to ten inputs at a time each to create their one of a kind sound. You can catch them tonight at Cervantes in Denver, if you haven't seen EOTO or haven't even heard of them, it would be criminal for you not to show.

After the free EOTO show, some friends and I mobbed to Red Rocks, without tickets, in an attempt to see Snoop Dog and Slightly Stoopid for free. I don't want to go into too much detail here of how it was accomplished, simply because the information is valuable and I plan to utilize it again in the future. The important thing to know is that it was a success and we probably had a better view of the stage then some people sitting in the back of the crowd.

While the sound quality would have been much better if we were inside the venue in front of the stage, it wasn't bad and could be heard clearly from where we were at. Besides, it was really about the experience, I've dreamed of seeing a show at Red Rocks in such a manner, and now I have and am in the family of people that know an amazing secret of the Red Rocks.

So the next time you are dying to see a show at the Rocks, but running short on cash, or in a bind because your favorite act is sold out, (no surprise at Red Rocks), you might want to drop in for some Sublimely Loose Lucy and holla at your boy, because you know he's always down for a show. It'll only cost you some fun and maybe a few scratches from the misson.

American Psychedelia: Full Circle At The Denver Art Museum

Its finally happened. A working time machine has been created and its located at the Denver Art Museum. Just walking over to the museum was a trip in of it's self. Closer to the entrance of the museum, more old hippies with tye dyed shirts, sandals, and beads could be seen flocking to the temporary hippy mecca of the experience at the DAM. Good vibes and good people. Welcome Home.

Stepping into The Psychedelic Experience was not just a blast back to the 60s and the rich history of the counterculture of the time, but also conjured up a flashback to the Rothbury Music Festival earlier this month. Many at the festival believed it was the modern Woodstock of our time. The Experience is a great opportunity for anyone with ties to the '60s or a modern festival to retrace their roots that have influenced what they have evolved into and become today.

The exhibit featured work from many of the prominent artists present during the explosion of the San Fransico Bay music scene. From the earlier work of Wes Wilson and Lee Conklin's trippy character styles and motifs, to later more structured posters by artists like David Singer, the whole show popped with color and detail that was easy to get entranced by.

While the poster themselves were extremely attractive and exciting, the information accompanying many of the pieces was even more interesting. The words depicted very clearly just how unique this time in America really was. People were coming to San Francisco because of an idea of how things could potentially be. Artists like those mentioned above, as well as numerous musicians, and cult like leaders were on a mission to contribute however they could to the promise of potential they saw in America.

The San Francisco cultural movement began in 1965 and exploded exponentially with the help of good tunes, strong psychedelics, and like minded people. It can be hard for a younger generation to look back and comprehend the changes that were taking place at the time, but a trip to a music festival today just might be the closest thing to it.

Concerts then, like many festivals today, were about much more than just the music. They were multi- sensory extravaganzas, complete with lights, costumes, movies, dancing, and strobes. At early music festivals like the three day Trips Festival in 1966, cultural leaders like the Merry Pranksters, Ken Kesey, Alan Kinsberg, and others led seminars advising how to live a better life. Between 1966 and 1971 the Fillmore and the Avalon were the spot to be each week in San Francisco.

By 1967, the San Francisco vibe had diffused out across America, Family Dog Productions, production company of the Fillmore and Avalon, opened up a venue in Denver in the same year. Authorities here did not take too kindly to the social movement and the Denver Dog's doors only remained open for three months.

This remarkable exhibit offers an amazing window into a world of the past that still lingers on today. It has been so popular, the museum has extended the exhibit through July 26. Anybody passionate about good music should be sure not to miss the extraordinary chance to get on the bus and take a trip through the story of the musical and cultural revolution. Any visitor will be sure to walk away with something they didn't know and a clearer understanding of the psychedelic '60s

Extended through July 26th

Members The amphitheater is a world class rock venue of epic proportions.

Surrounded by huge rock walls on both sides and a smaller wall behind the stage, lights and effects as well as the music are greatly enhanced.

The natural acoustics of the venue are phenomenal. The large 300 foot walls on either side of the seating area, are named Creation and Ship Rock. One idea is that these formations channel the sound from the stages powerful sound system while crowd noise and other distracting sounds are allowed to move straight up because the venue is outside. Whatever the true science behind the place is, it makes for one unique experience that can't be matched by many other locations.

One of the first notable performances at the venue was The Beatles on August 26, 1964 and Red Rocks has continued to bring great acts to the stage year after year. The road hasn't always been so smooth for the venue, as crazy happenings can easily come hand in hand with legendary rockers.

In the summer of 1971 Jethro Tull held a concert at Red Rocks. The show was sold out, yet over 1000 people without tickets showed up to the venue. These people were taken to a location where they could hear the show but couldn't see it. When the mob started to try and break police lines to enter the show, they were tear gassed.

Kate McNa, was sitting on some rocks when helicopters came and tear gassed the people on the rocks as well as the gate-crashers attempting to get into the show for free. The incident was later referred to as "Riot at Red Rocks," and led to rock shows being banned from the venue for five years. The stage was limited to softer acts. In the summer of 1976 rock acts were allowed to return and Jethro Tull once again took the stage.

Later in 1996, Phish had a multiple night run scheduled at the park. The following of the band was too much for the town of Morrison and Phish was banned from playing Red Rocks for ten years when Phish 'Phans' and police clashed in town.

Red Rocks was a favorite of the Grateful Dead to play, and other jam bands like String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, and Phish have taken a liking to the magical venue. Widespread, in fact, holds the record for most headlined shows at Red Rocks with 32.

Dave Matthews like many others has enjoyed doing live recordings for cd and dvd because of the great sound and world class environment for a show. The venue holds less than 10,000 people making a large place feel like an intimate show from many spots in the venue. Red Rocks was so popular in fact, that after it was voted best small outdoor venue for the 11th time by the magazine Pollstar, it was removed from the running and the award was actually named the Red Rocks Award, which is voted on every year.

If you haven't been to the venue it is a must. Pick any number of great bands that come through town and get yourself there. Their selection of music is as diverse as the wonders scattered throughout the park. If you have been, it is a great place to take people who are visiting or new to Colorado. It is after-all world renowned; people travel all over the world to come to see events at Red Rocks.

UP AND COMING ON THE ROCKS

SLIGHTLY STOOPID/ SNOOP DOG Rothburians return to the real world furiously uploading pictures to the internet, downloading live shows from the festival, reading about the aftermath of the party, trying to tell anyone who doesn't know just exactly what they missed out on; all this in an effort to cling onto the goodness they experienced.

Simply discussing Rothbury with non-attendees can be a daunting task, as jealousy can quickly run amuck with those who wanted to go or who have some idea of what they missed. These fence-sitters quickly become irritated with the constant discussion. There is some hope here however, that these people will make the correct decision and come next year.

An even unluckier group are those who simply have no idea or framework to comprehend the magnitude of beautiful and awe-inspiring emotions and feelings of the whole experience. These characters probably aren't cut out for the festival life anyways, but there is a need to share the experience with all. It is an attempt to provide evidence that 40,000 people can come together for one purpose in what was, for the most part, a peaceful and purposeful mission.

Bob Weir of The Dead said it best as he wrapped up an amazing fourth of July in the most amazing place ever, "This is a very special day for us to be here. Take this feeling home with you and do something good with it."

The Grateful Dead have always been about the music and were well aware of it's potential. They allowed taping of their shows since the beginning and asked that these recordings be shared freely. Some of their work was politically charged due to the intensity of life in the '60s.

More recently The Dead (the surviving members of The Grateful Dead w/ support at lead guitar and piano), have used their music politically to back Barrack Obama as they try to once again make a stand.

The similarities between the 1960s and today are striking. It is a politically charged environment and a time during which great changes are taking place. Then there was Woodstock, now there is Rothbury. People are still protesting, it just receives dummied down coverage. The future is uncertain, but all we can do is hope for the best and stand for something.

Perhaps it is this hope that has reunited The Dead and pushed them to provide us with something that can influence society for the better. To not follow Bob Weir's advice and do something good with the temporary transcendence the band provides would be a diservice to The Dead and all they stand for. It is an unwritten contract between you and the band. They play the music because it moves people. So move.
